History of Disc Golf in Dayton and the DDGA

Disc golf in Dayton started in 1978 when the first disc golf course in the Dayton area was installed at what is now the Eastwood Metropark. After 10 years of fun at what was then Dayton Parks Commission land, the course was moved to Beavercreek(for a month) and eventually moved to what has now become the Indian Riffle Disc Golf Course in Kettering.

In 1989, a new course was installed at Belmont Park in Dayton. Centrally located, Belmont Park Disc Golf Course is a staple for both casual and competitive disc golfers in the area. Home to the 1991 Pro Disc Golf World Championships, Belmont became part of disc golf history just a few years after being installed. At that point, the now defunct Miami Valley Sports Disc Association (MVSDA) was running tournaments and gaining attention within the region. The Ohio State Disc Golf Championships was a long time event ran in the Dayton area, and then Dayton resident Steve Wisecup had won the 1989 PDGA Disc Golf World Championships in Waterloo, Iowa.

For various reasons the MVSDA fell apart in the mid 90’s, and in June of 1997 a much needed new organization was born; the Dayton Disc Golf Association.
